The integration of Science and Art can be quite alluring.
This course is designed to equip you with the skills needed to accurately depict natural subjects through drawing. Whether you are a complete beginner or have some drawing experience, these structured classes will guide you through the processes of sketching, shaping with shading, recognising colours and adding texture and detail to your drawings.
Subjects may include plants, birds, insects or fungi. Throughout the course, you will encounter brief biology lessons designed to deepen your understanding of the subjects you are drawing. You will create a series of small drawings, guided by your tutor with practical demonstrations, gradually building up to larger projects. Starting with graphite and progressing to coloured pencils, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish with a willingness to explore and experiment!
Peta McDonald has a background in Biological Science and has been a science teacher for over 20 years, working in both primary and secondary school settings. Alongside her teaching career, she has developed her interest and skills in microscopy and illustration.
She is an Honorary Research associate at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne and recently completed a Botanical Illustration Studentship at the Melbourne Herbarium where she worked side by side with a botanist to illustrate miniature leafy liverworts.
Peta’s focus lies in capturing the intricate details of plants and natural objects. Her art integrates her scientific knowledge with her enjoyment of drawing. She delights in sharing this with others, promising to engage participants in the beauty and mystery of the natural world through classes using graphite, pen and coloured pencil. You can see more of her work on her website by clicking here.
All of our Nature in Art courses are suitable for all levels of experience - from complete beginners though to experienced students.
Peta also teaches on a Friday afternoon.
