Course Overview
This course is designed to support individuals with intellectual disabilities by focusing on a range of practical and social skills, centered around the theme of health and wellbeing. Through a variety of engaging and hands-on activities, participants will build literacy and numeracy skills that are applicable to everyday life. The course aims to foster personal growth, promote healthy choices, and enhance both practical and social capabilities.
Course Activities
Participants will engage in the following activities to develop practical skills and promote overall wellbeing:
- Planning and Cooking: Create a shopping list, find and read recipes, and prepare a meal.
- Online Shopping: Learn how to navigate and place orders through online shopping platforms.
- Goal Setting: Work in groups to set and work towards learning goals.
- Health and Fitness: Participate in games and exercises (e.g. chair exercises) and discuss healthy lifestyle choices.
- Conversation Practice: Develop face-to-face and phone communication skills, including making medical appointments.
- Social Interaction: Engage in group discussions with prompts like “Tell me about yourself”.
- Stress Management: Explore and practice healthy strategies for managing stress.

The course will explore the following topics to enhance practical skills and personal development:
- Goal Setting, Planning, and Time Management: Techniques for setting achievable goals, planning tasks, and managing time effectively.
- Decision Making and Scheduling: Skills for making informed decisions and creating efficient schedules.
- Teamwork: Building skills through group activities and projects.
- Basic Technology Skills: Introduction to digital skills for everyday use. (eg: using apps on phones)
- Current Issues and Trends: Staying informed about relevant topics and trends in various areas of life.
- Money Handling: Understanding basic financial concepts and managing personal finances.
- Exercise and Nutrition: Learning about physical fitness and balanced nutrition for a healthy lifestyle.
- Problem Solving: Developing strategies for overcoming challenges and finding solutions.
- Job Tasks: Exploring basic job-related skills and responsibilities.
- Confidence Building: Techniques for self-advocacy and improving personal confidence.
